Core Aeration

Core aeration creates small holes in your soil to break up compaction, giving nutrients, water, and air better access to grass roots. It's one of the most effective things you can do for a struggling or thinning lawn.

Benefits of core aeration:

  • Reduces soil compaction from foot traffic and equipment
  • Improves water absorption and reduces runoff
  • Promotes deeper, stronger root growth
  • Enhances fertilizer and overseeding effectiveness
  • Reduces thatch buildup over time

Best performed in late summer or early fall for cool-season grasses common in Minnesota.

Dethatching

Thatch is the layer of dead grass stems, roots, and organic debris that builds up between the lawn surface and the soil. Once it exceeds ½ inch, it blocks water, air, and fertilizer from reaching the roots.

Our dethatching service:

  • Mechanically removes excess thatch with commercial-grade equipment
  • Restores air and water penetration to the root zone
  • Improves overall lawn health, color, and density
  • Often paired with aeration and overseeding for maximum results

Fertilization

A well-fed lawn is a resilient lawn. Our fertilization program delivers the right nutrients at the right time to keep your grass thick, green, and healthy all season.
  • Seasonal Applications: Custom programs for spring green-up, summer strength, and fall recovery
  • Slow-Release Formulas: Extended feeding without the risk of burn
  • Targeted Treatments: Address specific deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, or iron
  • Post-Aeration Fertilizing: Applied immediately after aeration for maximum root uptake

Overseeding

Over time, lawns develop thin or bare spots from foot traffic, drought, disease, or winter damage. Overseeding fills those gaps with new grass — the most cost-effective way to restore a thick, uniform lawn.

Best results come from overseeding in early fall, right after aeration. Our process:

  • Select seed varieties proven for Minnesota's climate
  • Prepare soil surface for optimal germination rates
  • Apply seed at the correct density for even coverage
  • Follow with starter fertilizer to support new seedling development

Weed Control

Weeds compete with your grass for nutrients, water, and sunlight. Our weed control program keeps them in check all season long so your turf stays healthy and dense.
  • Pre-Emergent Treatment: Applied in spring to prevent weed seeds from germinating
  • Post-Emergent Treatment: Targets broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clover, thistle, and creeping charlie
  • Spot Treatments: Precision application to stubborn problem areas
  • Seasonal Programs: Ongoing protection throughout the full growing season

Hedge & Shrub Trimming

Well-maintained hedges and shrubs make a significant difference in your property's curb appeal. Our trimming service keeps your landscape looking sharp and professionally maintained throughout the season.
  • Hedge and shrub shaping, sizing, and trimming
  • Overgrowth reduction and restoration cuts
  • All debris cleanup and hauling after each visit
  • Available as a one-time service or recurring seasonal maintenance

Insect & Pest Control

Surface-feeding insects like sod webworms, chinch bugs, and armyworms can destroy a lawn in a matter of weeks. Our program identifies and treats infestations before they cause serious damage.
  • Preventative and curative surface insect treatments
  • Targeted identification for precision treatment
  • Safe for pets and children when applied per label directions

Noticing brown patches, wilting grass, or unusual bird activity on your lawn? It may be insect damage — contact us for an evaluation.

Grub Control

Grubs feed on grass roots beneath the soil, causing large patches of turf to turn brown and pull away like a carpet. By the time you see the damage, the grubs are already gone.
  • Preventative Grub Control: Applied in early summer before eggs hatch — the most effective option
  • Curative Treatments: Applied when active grubs are discovered mid-season
  • Follow-Up Lawn Repair: Overseeding and turf repair after grub damage is treated

Minnesota lawns are particularly vulnerable to Japanese beetle grubs. Prevention is far cheaper than repair.

  • Spring Startup: Full system inspection, head adjustment, zone testing, and activation
  • Fall Winterization: Complete blowout to prevent freeze damage
  • Mid-Season Checks: Coverage inspections and controller adjustments
  • Minor Repairs: Head replacement, zone troubleshooting, controller programming

Landscape Mulch Installation

Fresh wood or bark mulch applied to your landscape beds does more than look good — it actively protects your plants, suppresses weeds, and improves soil health with every passing season. Ka-Plow handles the full process: delivery, bed prep, installation, and cleanup, so your property gets a polished, professional finish.

Benefits of professional mulch installation:

  • Moisture Retention: Reduces watering frequency by slowing evaporation from the soil surface around plants and shrubs
  • Weed Suppression: A proper 2–3 inch layer blocks sunlight and inhibits weed seed germination in beds
  • Temperature Regulation: Insulates plant roots from summer heat and early fall freezes
  • Soil Health: Organic mulches break down over time, adding nutrients and improving soil structure beneath beds
  • Curb Appeal: Uniformly mulched beds with clean edges instantly sharpen the appearance of any property

We offer shredded hardwood, black, brown, and red dyed, and cedar mulch options. Applied around trees, shrubs, garden beds, and landscape borders. Available as a one-time installation or as part of a recurring bed maintenance program.

Sod Installation

When overseeding isn't fast enough, sod delivers an instant, fully established lawn. Whether you're starting fresh on new construction, replacing a damaged area, or upgrading a patchy yard, Ka-Plow handles the entire installation from prep to final roll.

Our sod installation process:

  1. Site Assessment: Evaluate soil quality, grade, and drainage before any material is ordered
  2. Soil Preparation: Remove existing vegetation, till, grade, and amend soil as needed for optimal root contact
  3. Sod Selection: Minnesota-appropriate varieties selected for sun exposure, traffic load, and maintenance level
  4. Installation: Sod laid in staggered rows, seams tight, edges trimmed cleanly along all borders
  5. Rolling & Watering: Rolled firmly for root-to-soil contact; initial watering completed at install
  6. Care Instructions: Watering schedule and first-mow guidance provided after every installation

Available for residential, commercial, and HOA properties of all sizes.

Landscape Bed Maintenance

Landscape beds require consistent attention throughout the growing season to stay looking their best. Ka-Plow provides scheduled bed maintenance visits that keep your planting areas clean, defined, and healthy without you having to lift a finger.

Our bed maintenance service includes:

  • Hand Weeding: Manual removal of weeds from all landscape beds — no blanket spraying near desirable plants
  • Edging: Crisp, defined borders re-cut along beds, sidewalks, and lawn transitions each visit
  • Mulch Refreshing: Existing mulch turned and topped up to maintain proper depth and appearance
  • Plant Trimming: Light shaping and deadheading of perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs
  • Debris Removal: All clippings, leaves, and waste hauled from the property after each visit

Available as recurring bi-weekly or monthly visits throughout the growing season. Ideal for residential properties, HOAs, and commercial accounts that want consistently maintained grounds.

Stump Grinding

A leftover tree stump is more than an eyesore — it's a tripping hazard, a potential pest harborage, and an obstacle that gets in the way of mowing, landscaping, and lawn use. Ka-Plow removes stumps cleanly and efficiently using commercial-grade grinding equipment.

Our stump grinding service includes:

  • Below-Grade Grinding: Stumps ground 6–12 inches below the surface — deep enough to sod, seed, or plant over
  • Root Flare Removal: Surface roots extending from the stump ground down flush with surrounding grade
  • Debris Cleanup: Wood chip grindings raked and either left as fill or hauled away per your preference
  • Area Backfill: Void left by grinding filled with soil or grindings and raked level

Available as a standalone service or as a follow-on to tree removal. Multiple stumps can typically be completed in a single visit.

Soil Testing & Amendment

Healthy grass starts below the surface. If your lawn isn't responding to fertilization, struggles to hold moisture, or never seems to fully green up — the problem is likely in the soil. Ka-Plow offers professional soil testing and targeted amendment programs that address the root cause rather than masking the symptoms.

Our soil health service includes:

  • Soil Testing: Laboratory analysis of your soil's pH, nutrient levels, organic matter content, and texture — giving us a precise picture of what's missing or out of balance
  • Lime Application: Raises soil pH in acidic lawns, improving nutrient availability and microbial activity — one of the most cost-effective lawn improvements available in Minnesota
  • Sulfur Application: Lowers pH in overly alkaline soils to bring conditions into the optimal range for turf growth
  • Compost Topdressing: A thin layer of screened compost worked into the turf surface to improve soil structure, water retention, and microbial life over time
  • Gypsum Treatment: Breaks up compacted clay soils and improves drainage without altering pH — ideal for heavy Twin Cities clay
  • Organic Matter Programs: Long-term soil building plans that reduce dependency on synthetic inputs over time

Soil amendments work best when paired with aeration, overseeding, and a proper fertilization program. Ka-Plow can build a complete soil-to-surface plan based on your test results.
